As a guardian of 4 cats I count myself very lucky that my cats don’t have any behavior problems. I enjoy watching the way Jackson interacts with the felines on the show.  He certainly has the magic touch. Plus I’m sure other cat guardians will pick up plenty of ideas on how they can build better cat living spaces for their pets. Truly an inspiring show.

Fourth of July Terror

As a pet owner I dread the fouth of July, mainly because my four cats are afraid of the noise of fireworks. Trust me if your cat does not like thunderstorms they most definitely will not like fireworks. Please keep you pets indoors, preferably with the air conditioner on.

I make sure I have the TV on as background noise for them, all doors and windows shut, as well as the drapes or blinds closed so they can’t see any reflection of the fireworks.

This is definitely a NO to fireworks.

Pet owners urged to make sure cats and dogs are protected from Fourth of July …

Novartis Capstar Flea Treatment.

Novartis Capstar Flea TreatmentJust as with their human parents, not all cats and kittens can tolerate Flea and Tick Topical Solution.  For those pets that can’t, they have the alternative in taking a pill by mouth…..now I know, I know – been there done that, and have lost count of the number of pills I have collected off the floor, the furniture, and even once from my coffee cup!!!!!  Giving a cat a pill is not the easiest job in the world – however, I will reveal a handy dandy little tool later that will make this task much easier.

Cure your small cat or dog (2 to 25 lbs.) of adult fleas with Novartis Capstar.  This small tablet interferes with the normal nerve transmission in the fleas and ultimately leads to death.

Tips for Using Flea and Tick Products  -   By  www.fda.gov

  • Read the label carefully before use. If you don’t understand the wording, ask your veterinarian or call the manufacturer. “Even if you’ve used the product many times before,” says Stohlman, “read the label because the directions or warnings may have changed.”
  • Follow the directions exactly. If the product is for dogs, don’t use it on cats or other pets. If the label says use weekly, don’t use it daily. If the product is for the house or yard, don’t put it directly on your pet.
  • Keep multiple pets separated after applying a product until it dries to prevent one animal from grooming another and ingesting a drug or pesticide.
  • Talk to your veterinarian before using a product on weak, old, medicated, sick, pregnant, or nursing pets, or on pets that have previously shown signs of sensitivity to flea or tick products.
  • Monitor your pet for side effects after applying the product, particularly when using the product on your pet for the first time.
  • If your pet experiences a bad reaction from a spot-on product, immediately bathe the pet with mild soap, rinse with large amounts of water, and call your veterinarian.
  • Call your veterinarian if your pet shows symptoms of illness after using a product. Symptoms of poisoning include poor appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive salivation.
  • Do not apply a product to kittens or puppies unless the label specifically allows this treatment. Use flea combs to pick up fleas, flea eggs, and ticks on puppies and kittens that are too young for flea and tick products.
  • Wash your hands immediately with soap and water after applying a product, or use protective gloves while applying.
  • Store products away from food and out of children’s reach.

Flea Treatment for Cats.

In today’s environment there are several types of Flea  Treatment for Cats:  Flea collars, topical flea solution, flea powders, and flea combs.

The most popular of these are the Flea Collars, and the Topical Flea Solution. However, if your cat or cats are anything like mine they do not like either of these solutions, and of course I have to play the heavy and say “suck it up guys”.  Those fleas are a danger to your health, and left untreated will make for a very miserable pet. I would like to start by looking at the different types of Topical Flea Solutions.

Merial Frontline Plus Flea and Tick Control for Cats and Kittens:

Frontline Plus For CatsThis product features the following:

  • Flea, flea egg, lice, and tick control for cats and kittens
  • 6-dose supply provides flea, flea egg, chewing lice, and tick relief for up to 6 months
  • For all cats aged 8 weeks and older
  • Easy 3-step application process

This product is also waterproof, and kills ticks, including those that may transmit lyme disease.

As a rule cats generally dislike having this type of medication applied, they are suspicious my nature, with a great sense of smell, and one whiff of this medication and they will take off running…..trust me been there done that……  One tip on applying this medication is, well before you do this hold your cat in the position you will hold him in when the medication is applied.  Get your cat used to being held in the position, do it often, and not just when it is time for the treatment.  The trick is not to let them associate your holding him in that position with the application of the medication.  The biggest mistake you can make with your pet is to yell at him while trying to apply the medication.

Flea and Tick Control

The onset of Spring and Summer with the rising temperatures bring on the outbreak once again of Fleas and Ticks.  According to my Vet this year the Flea and Tick season is going to be extremely bad.  For me, and I am sure for you too this is not good news, especially considering that one flea can lead to full flea infestation, in the blink of an eye.

Adult fleas can lay somewhere between 15 to 20 eggs per day!  Can you imagine the number of fleas that could be living not only on your pets, but in your carpets, on the furniture, clothing, and if your cat likes to sleep on your bed that too!

I will be reviewing the best Flea and Tick prevention medications for your cat.
